Data has become critical in the private equity industry. The firms that consistently source, integrate, and act on differentiated data are the ones making better investment decisions — from sourcing and diligence through portfolio management and exit. We’re often asked where we get some of our data from. Over the years, we’ve explored a wide range of alternative datasets across the investment lifecycle. We’ve gathered them here for convenience.
Pricing reflects typical enterprise contracts at the time of writing. Actual costs vary significantly based on scope, seats, data granularity, and negotiation. Many vendors offer modular pricing, so you can start narrow and expand over time.
Sourcing the data is only half the problem — turning it into a defensible signal is the other half. That's the core of our bespoke data analysis practice, and our causal-validation methodology covers how we separate real signals from coincidence.

Costs vary widely depending on number of users, data scope, geographic coverage, and contract terms. Many vendors require custom quotes. Inclusion in this guide does not constitute an endorsement of any vendor.
Alternative data is any dataset outside traditional financial statements and filings that investors use to evaluate companies and markets — credit card transaction panels, web-scraped pricing and reviews, job postings, foot traffic, satellite imagery, app usage, and government datasets. PE firms use it to validate a target's revenue and customer trends before the data room opens, and to monitor portfolio companies after close.
How much does alternative data cost?
Annual costs range from free (government datasets like Census, BLS, and SEC filings) to over $1M per year for premium credit card transaction panels. Most commercial categories — web data, employment data, foot traffic, satellite imagery — fall between $10K and $300K per year depending on scope, granularity, and seats. Many vendors price modularly, so firms can start narrow and expand.
Which alternative data sources do PE firms use most?
The workhorses are transaction and card panel data for revenue validation, web-scraped pricing and review data for competitive positioning, employment and job-postings data for headcount and hiring signals, and foot traffic data for consumer businesses. Free government data — Census, BLS, UCC filings, state licensing records — is heavily used for market sizing and sourcing.
How do PE firms use alternative data in due diligence?
Before exclusivity, alternative data supports outside-in diligence: validating revenue trajectory with transaction panels, checking customer sentiment through reviews, verifying headcount claims against employment data, and sizing local markets with geospatial data. It lets a deal team pressure-test management's story with evidence that doesn't depend on the data room.
Where can I get free alternative data?
Government sources are the richest free tier: Census Bureau demographics, Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data, SEC EDGAR filings, USPTO patents, state UCC and licensing filings, and municipal permit records. Public web data — reviews, job postings, pricing pages — can also be collected directly, subject to terms of service and applicable law.
Need help putting this to work?
Our bespoke data analysis practice helps PE firms evaluate, integrate, and operationalize alternative data across the investment lifecycle.
